Trip Description

This journey leads you into a quieter side of the eastern Himalaya, where tea-covered hills rise into misty ridgelines, monasteries rest above deep river valleys, and village life still follows the rhythm of seasons, rituals, and community gatherings. From Kolkata to the green heights of Kalimpong, onward into the forests of Pedong and the sacred heart of Sikkim, the route is shaped by culture, spirituality, and human connection. You travel gently through landscapes that change each day, sharing meals, learning local traditions, and discovering how faith and nature continue to guide daily life in this region.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Kolkata, flight to Bagdogra, drive to Kalimpong

On arrival at Kolkata International Airport, you are welcomed and assisted with your connection to Bagdogra. After landing, a road transfer takes you into the hills toward Kalimpong, a town surrounded by tea gardens and lush slopes. The first impressions are green and fragrant, especially in spring when rhododendrons and magnolias brighten the mountainsides and orchids and wildflowers fill the lower valleys. After check in, you settle near one of the renowned orchid nurseries that made the area famous among plant collectors. In the evening, you visit another nursery known for exporting rare and exotic flowers, a perfect introduction to the region’s botanical wealth. Overnight in Kalimpong.

DAY 2 – Kalimpong, viewpoints, crafts, and old bazaars

After breakfast, the day begins with a climb to Durpin Dara, a hilltop viewpoint overlooking the plains and the Teesta River, one of the lifelines of Sikkim. On clear days, the snowy presence of Kangchenjunga appears on the horizon, immense and unforgettable. Nearby, a visit to the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang monastery adds a spiritual note to the morning, with prayer flags and quiet halls above the valley. Later, you stop at a traditional paper workshop where bamboo fibre is still used to create handmade sheets. The day continues with a visit to Dr Graham’s Homes, founded to support children in need and set within peaceful grounds. From the chapel, the views stretch across Kalimpong and toward distant Himalayan ridges. To end the day, you explore the old bazaars where villagers arrive in traditional dress to sell produce, spices, textiles, and everyday goods. The atmosphere is lively and deeply local, offering a glimpse of Kalimpong as a true hill town rather than a tourist stop. Overnight in Kalimpong.

DAY 3 – Kalimpong to Pedong, village life and monastery traditions

After breakfast, you drive to Pedong, a small village set among pine forests with wide Himalayan views. After arriving and settling in, you walk through the village and visit the Sangchen Dorjee Monastery, where old wall paintings, sacred texts and living traditions reveal the cultural depth of the region. After breakfast, you visit the Rumtek Monastery, set high on a hillside facing the direction of Gangtok. Originally built in the eighteenth century and later rebuilt after a fire, it remains one of the most important monastic centres in Sikkim and a strong symbol of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in the region. Inside, the prayer hall holds murals, silk banners, and sacred objects that create a powerful atmosphere of devotion and artistry. A walk nearby brings you to the Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies, and you also see remnants of the older monastery site, linking past and present in one place. The afternoon is free for personal exploration or rest. Overnight in Rumtek.

DAY 6 – Excursion to Gangtok, monasteries, culture, and local craft

Today you travel to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, where mountain life blends with urban energy. You visit Enchey Monastery, known for its spiritual presence and annual ceremonies that include dances and pujas. Later, you may visit the government handicraft centre or the Tibetan research institute. In the afternoon, time is set aside for the Flower Show complex. On the way back, you stroll along MG Road before returning to Rumtek for the night.

DAY 7 – Rumtek to Kewzing, monastery welcome and homestay experience

You travel toward Kewzing, a small village with wide mountain views and a strong sense of community. Before reaching the village, you stop at a roadside monastery where monks welcome visitors with warmth and a ceremonial silk scarf. A cup of tea with the lama becomes a moment of connection. Later, you arrive in Kewzing and share a traditional meal with a local family. As evening falls, you settle into your homestay. Overnight in Kewzing.

DAY 8 – Kewzing, slow immersion in village rhythms

This day is dedicated to living the village pace. Walks through nature, time with local families, and the calm of the surroundings invite a different kind of travel, one rooted in presence rather than movement. Overnight in Kewzing.

DAY 9 – Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse ruins, and cultural evening

Today you travel to Pemayangtse Monastery, founded in the seventeenth century and considered one of the most important monasteries in Sikkim. Nearby lie the ruins of Rabdentse, once the second capital of the old kingdom of Sikkim. In the evening, you return to Kewzing and enjoy a cultural performance before dinner. Overnight in Kewzing.

DAY 10 – Kewzing to Kurseong, tea estate life and shared meals

DAY 11 – Darjeeling day trip, mountain heritage and hill town charm

After breakfast, you travel to Darjeeling. Visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Later, stroll along Chowrasta before returning to the tea estate.

DAY 12 – Kurseong to Siliguri by train, then to Chalsa in the Dooars

Begin the day with a memorable train ride from Kurseong to Siliguri. Continue to Chalsa in the Dooars region. Time is set aside for rest, wellness or relaxation. Overnight in Chalsa.

DAY 14 – Kolkata, last moments and departure

A vehicle is available for last minute shopping or final city discoveries. Depending on your flight schedule, you are transferred to the airport for departure, bringing the journey to a close with memories of monasteries, tea hills, village life, and the distinctive spirit of the eastern Himalaya.
